MASERU – One of Lesotho’s top-notch hotels - the Mpilo Boutique has been forced to close doors and retrench all its employees due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic that has devastated the entire global economy.

The establishment owned by the Matekane Group of Companies (MGC) revealed in a statement this week that it will remain closed until there is a better movement in the economy and the virus is under control.

Situated in the heart of Maseru, the hotel is a luxury boutique that offers modern comforts that appeal to both leisure and corporate clients.

It further offers elegant accommodation with rooms fully equipped for a stay in. It is centrally located, minutes away from all amenities, including the city centre, the Maseru Golf Course, major attractions and it is the business hub for all local and international corporates.

“After the Right Honorable Prime Minister’s address regarding the lockdown, this affected business, therefore profits. Following this, a gazette was shared and limits hotels from a full operation and we are unable to survive with restaurant operations that are also limited to only take outs. A hotel survives through tourism, therefore lodging and dining, these functions we are unable to perform,” the hotel management said in a statement.

While it is clear that the hotel industry mainly survives through tourism, the latest government gazette on Covid-19 has clearly states that all boarders shall be closed and that restaurants, shisanyama and similar entities, enterprises and business shall only offer take-aways.

“It is with this background that the shareholders have decided to halt operations until there is a better movement in the economy and the virus has been put under control. We are hopeful that this seize in operations will not be indefinite.

“It is therefore on this basis that shutting down will mean retrenchments for all Mpilo Boutique Hotel employees. The shareholders plan, after a thorough review, to reopen and prioritize its former employees in the process of a phased operation as and when the time comes,” the statement also says.
