A NEW alcoholic beverage called BEV produced by a local brewer, Mpho Seakhoa, is scheduled for tasting at the Basotho Beer Festival to be held in ’Matšooana, Thaba-Tseka from October 29 - 30.

The two-day beer tasting extravaganza is organised by Femsis Festivals.
The open-minded brewer, from Ha Thetsane in Maseru says she is on track to put her first bottles on shelves for consumption before the end of the year.

She says she finally bottled her first samples after four failed trials that began a month ago.

“In search of market, I’m still in talks with some beer outlets such as off-sales and restaurants in Maseru," she says.

She says her creation of the wine was inspired by the events of the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, adding that she draws her motivation from late grandfather who was a wine connoisseur and a great farmer.

“He had a thorough understanding of wine as well as farming and I learnt a lot from him,” Seakhoa says.

According to the festival organisers, the event is intended to promote responsible drinking.

“We want to remind revellers that beer is more than just drinking. There is lot of fun in beverages (bevs) besides drinking. You should know that you can enjoy bevs without heavy drinking. That is why we also came up with an exciting line-up of beer games for participants,” a statement released this week by the organisers says.

The games comprise of wine and cider tasting, participants taste different unidentified drinks from glasses and theirs is to identify them.

The other game is called – ‘balance with your brain’. In this game, participants balance any number of bottles (half full) on their heads or with their mouths.

Kaizer Matšumunyane of the Africa Beer Festival is also one of the popular organisers of local beer festivals. The last Africa Beer Festival was held at Maseru Club in 2019.
During the event, Matšumunyane was quoted as saying: “Basotho are not exposed to different beer-flavours. I mean, some people don’t even know that beer comes in different tastes and that it does not have to be bitter to be called a beer, our festival offers an opportunity for them to have a taste of a wide range of beers.”
According to Matšumunyane, both micro and macro brewers from around Africa showcased their products at the festival.
“The private brewers have shown more interest and used the platform to market their products and tap into the market. The event is also meant to entice Basotho into the brewing business,” he had said, adding there was still room for more brewers in Lesotho.
