LERIBE - THE people's spectacular entertaining show of car drag racing returns to Leribe on Boxing Day - much to the delight of its loyal fans.

The event organised by the Leribe Drag Racing club will be held in Ha Leshoele on the outskirts of Leribe.

The normally heavy crowd pulling show has been running on and off due to, among others, challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was last held in October and was attended by multitudes.

"Drivers betting and side (public) betting is allowed. No musk, no entry and all COVID-19 protocols will be observed," announces the club administrator, Molapo Khethisa.
Drag racing is described as perhaps the fastest, loudest and most spectacular motor sport of all, pitting two cars and drivers against each other to see who will be first to cross a set finish line.

The race follows a short, straight course from a standing start over to a measured distance.
The aim is to reach the finish line as quickly as possible. Generally, events use a knock-out format, with the winner of each round progressing to the next until the winner is declared.
In many countries around the world, drag racing sport has taken the form of both illegal street racing and as a regulated motorsport.
"The discipline is most popular in its American homeland but there is a thriving scene here in Africa and the rest of Europe too. In developing countries like Lesotho, ordinary to modified cars are allowed to race for money. Modified cars are determined by factors such as engine size, modifications and fuel type.

"You can either modify a road car or you can buy a ready-prepared car and for competitive drag racing, your car has to be road worthy. Further details can be obtained through the organiser.

"The race depends on skill, timing, and having similarly defined cars lined up for a fair fight. The show is gaining some popularity, thanks to the number of drag race events the organisers have put up since they started," explains drag racer, Jeremea Teu.
