SCORES of people from all over the country convened at Setsoto stadium on Friday morning to witness the inauguration of Lesotho’s seventh Prime Minister, Sam Matekane.

Dignitaries from across the continent and other parts of the world also attended the august event to welcome the country’s new leader.

Political and business leaders from countries such as the neighbouring South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Rwanda, and Eswatini also attended.

The renowned mining magnate becomes the country’s premier after winning the national elections of October 7, registering 56 constituencies.

His seven-month-old party, the Revolution for Prosperity (RFP) has formed a coalition government with Monyane Moleleki’s Alliance of Democrats (AD) and the Movement for Economic Change (MEC) of Selibe Mochoboroane.

Expectations, particularly among the youth are high that the incoming PM will reduce poverty, create employment and generally revive the country’s floundering economy.

Matekane replaces Dr Moeketsi Majoro whose All Basotho Convention (ABC) lost spectacularly when it failed to win even a single constituency in the just-ended general elections.
