A MEMBER of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) who is testifying in the murder trial of the late army boss, Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao has taken a shot at the media, accusing them of inaccurate and lopsided reports.

Lance Corporal Mokete Halahala who is the first witness in the long awaited trial on Thursday asked for protection from the High Court against the media, especially certain radio stations which he however, declined to identify.

He testified that he never mentioned anything about the former army chief, Lt Gen Tlali Kamoli who is charged with Mahao’s murder.

Kamoli who is awaiting trial at the Maseru Maximum Prison is charged along with fellow soldiers including Motsamai Fako, Motshoane Machae, Tšitso Ramoholi, Litekanyo Nyakane, Haleo Makara, Lekhooa Moepi, Marasi 'Moleli and Mohlalefi Seitlheko.

They are also accused of a number of attempted murder counts, theft, obstruction of justice, damage to property, aggravated assault and risk of injury or death.

The crimes allegedly occurred in Ha Lekete on the outskirts of Maseru and the Ratjomose army headquarters on June 25, 2015, the day on which Mahao was allegedly executed.

In his testimony this week, Halahala expressed fear that the misinformation in media reports will do more harm than good.

Senior Counsel Shaun Abrahams who represents the Crown shared similar sentiments, submitting that the media have an obligation to report responsibly and accurately as the voice of the general people.

He agreed that witnesses should be protected against unfair and inaccurate media reports.

The case continues before Judge Charles Hungwe.
