CAPE Town City edged out Lamontville Golden Arrows 1-0 in a DStv Premiership match at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Khanyiso Mayo's second-half goal earned the Citizens the win and they climbed up to eighth place on the league standings, while Abafana Bes'thende remained 10th on the log after losing at home.

Having been named Man of the Match after Arrows' draw with Orlando Pirates on Wednesday, Nkosingphile Gumede continued his good form with his side under pressure in the opening exchanges.

The former South Africa under-23 goalkeeper produced a fantastic save to deny City's new Venezuelan attacker Darwin Gonzalez, who was making his official debut for the Citizens.

The hosts did threaten through Ntsikelelo Nxadi, whose goal-bound effort was deflected just over the crossbar by Taariq Fielies after the Arrows defender was afforded space and time to shoot from the visitors' box.

Gonzalez, who was a constant threat to Abafana Bes'thende's defence, delivered a quality cross which was parried away by Gumede before Mogamat May could score with a simple tap in from close range and the score was 0-0 at halftime.

The Citizens continued to play crosses into the hosts' box which were parried away by Gumede. However, Gumede was nearly beaten by Craig Martin's dangerous curling cross which narrowly missed the target.

Arrows looked dangerous on the counterattack as they were able to unsettle the City defence with their speedy attackers, but the likes of Saziso Magawana and Nduduzo Sibiya could not keep their shots on target.

Eric Tinkler, the City head coach, decided to introduce Mayo eight minutes after the hour-mark and the former South Africa under-17 international proved to be an inspired substitute.

The Citizens were awarded a free-kick near the hosts' box with 12 minutes left and Mayo stepped up, and beat Gumede with a wonderful strike from the set-piece to earn City a 1-0 win.
