Despite bad weather, Machabeng College students defied all odds to hold their annual sports day at Setsoto Stadium in Maseru on Friday, February 15. “Our future plan is to invite fellow students from different schools to come and compete with us. Our sports science studies encourage us to put some of the lessons to practice hence we encourage our students to take part in different sports in order to identify their strengths and their leadership skills in sports. We are also motivated by our prefects to raise funds on our own,” said Constance Ateka, one of the students. Although some of the students abstained because of bad weather, those present had the presence of their parents to spectate and cheer them up. And parents are highly expected and encouraged to attend in order to motivate their children, according to Ateka.

Students competed in four categories (Four houses). There were Falcons, Hawks, Eagles and Ravens who took part in various sport disciplines from hurdles, relay, high jump, cricket, javelin, discuss and tennis, among others. The levels of competitions were classified by age groups with the youngest being juniors between 11-14 years, then intermediaries between 15-16 years, the senior age group between 17-18 years and then the above 18 years group. The teams that performed well by accumulating most points in each category had to content themselves with delicious burgers at the end of the game term. Due to bad weather conditions some certain activities like high jump couldn’t take place because of the slippery surfaces.

Chele Tlai-Tlai who participated in hurdles told Metro: “We jumped over the hurdles in full sprint until we go over the last one. Then at the finish point we sprint to the finish line. The experience gets your adrenalin rush all over the body. So, you have to focus on balance and not tripling over the hurdle. But overall, it is a wonderful game to participate in.” According to one of the students, Norbert Muvhiringi, Machabeng Sports Day is not only entertaining but it also provides conducive environment where teachers, including teachers who are not in sports, and students are able to socialise. “It’s indeed fascinating. However, we have just been disturbed by this bad weather and could not enjoy to the fullest,” he said.
