A MEMBER of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) who is accused of mounting an illegal roadblock and robbing a Maseru business a sum of M51 750 briefly appeared before the Maseru Magistrate’s Court on Thursday last week.

The robbery according to police spokesperson Sub Inspector ’Mareabetsoe Mofoka occurred earlier in January in Ha Foso, Berea.

Police Constable Mpho Secker has meanwhile been suspended from the police service until the case against him has been finalised by the court.

Secker, 41, of Ha Mabote, Maseru is charged along with three civilians who allegedly masqueraded as police officers during the roadblock.

The four accused men made their initial appearance in court on January 14 and were remanded in custody.

The quartet is expected back in court later this month when their trial commences.

Secker is the second police officer to allegedly mount an illegal roadblock targeting a local businessman in January.

This after another Police Constable who is based in Lithoteng, Maseru was last week arrested by soldiers with the assistance of members of the public for trying to rob a Pakistani businessman during a similar incident.

The Police Constable was arrested along with a civilian who was also masquerading as a policeman.

The incident occurred in Mahlabatheng near St Michaels in Roma.
