THE trial against two soldiers who are accused of the 2014 murder of Ha Leqele resident, Lisebo Tang still awaits allocation following the unexpected resignation of the presiding judge, Justice Kabelo Lebotse.

The accused were at the time guarding the residence of former army commander, Lieutenant General Tlali Kamoli.

The case is one of a few in which a lot of ground had been covered as it had progressed to a stage where one of the accused, Private Kopano Matsoso was discharged after the Crown could not link him to the crime.

Matsoso was charged together with Corporal Tjekane Sebolai and Private Selone Ratšiu with the murder of Tang on May 9, 2014 in Sekoting, Ha Leqele.

They also faced the attempted murder of Tang’s companion, Tšepo Jane, who suffered gunshot injuries during that attack that allegedly occurred near Kamoli’s residence.

All three were at the time part of soldiers who were assigned to guard Kamoli’s residence. They were further charged with malicious damage to property for allegedly riddling Jane’s vehicle, a Toyota Hilux 4x4 van with bullet holes during the same incident.

In his ruling, Justice Lebotse had expressed his satisfaction at the fact that the matter had been properly reported following the chain of command.

He said it would have been inappropriate for Matsoso to have skipped the chain of command and reported the incident to the police as the Crown argued.

He showed that he was satisfied the Crown established a prima facie case against both Sobolai and Ratšiu, hence they have a case to answer. LeNA
